Winter in California always carries a unique warmth. Even during the first weekend of December, the gentle sunlight bathes the land, filling the air with life energy. In the suburbs of California's state capital, the 40 acre oasis of the Yin Family Ranch played host to the 2024 National Leadership Conference of the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Association (APAPA). It was a moment of profound significance, as over 70 APAPA leaders across the country from New York, Washington DC, Alaska, Michigan, Indiana, Washington, Iowa, California and other states gathered to discuss and plan the future of political education for the Asian American community.

A Warm Welcome at the Yin Family Estate

As the main venue for the event, the Yin Family Estate not only symbolizes California's unique climate but also carries a deep sense of Asian cultural heritage. APAPA's founder, CC Yin, and his wife, Regina Yin, along with current Executive Director Mary Yin Liu, personally welcomed every leader who traveled from afar. The leaders toured the largest Asian cultural center in the country, which was rebuilt after a devastating wildfire by the Yin family. This newly constructed facility has become both a physical and cultural pillar for APAPA's continued growth. The Oak Hill Training Center was beautifully adorned with warm lights and festive decorations, setting the tone for the extraordinary significance of the conference. This was not just another gathering it was a passionate and visionary reunion.

The conference's main focus was leadership training, where strategic planning for the future of the chapters took center stage. Leaders from various chapters shared their successes and experiences, inspiring and learning from one another. In the Oak Hill Training Center’s hall, heated discussions filled the air as everyone explored ways to further increase Asian American community engagement and integration.

Inspirational Speeches and Empowerment

Several inspiring speeches were featured throughout the event. Dr. Aisha Wahab, a California State Senator, delivered a thought-provoking address on the importance of civic participation and the vital role the Asian American community plays in shaping America's future. With passionate words, she urged everyone to be more proactive in public affairs. Texas State Representative Gene Wu and New York State Assemblymember Grace Lee also gave powerful remote speeches, sharing personal experiences to encourage young Asian Americans to step up as community leaders. Congressmember Doris Matsui and newly elected Congressmember Dave Min also shared their support with a video to thank the APAPA leaders.

A highlight of the conference was the sharing session by APAPA internship program alumni and community leaders. These young interns shared their stories of political involvement and community service, showcasing how APAPA has nurtured the next generation of leaders. One intern from the University of California, Davis, emotionally shared, "APAPA gave me a platform and helped me believe that my voice can impact the future of American communities."

A Celebration of Diversity and Achievement

To celebrate the approaching Christmas season, APAPA hosted a grand celebration at its headquarters in California's state capital. Representatives from various ethnic groups gathered to sing and laugh together, reflecting the unique charm of America's multiculturalism. The hall gleamed with lights, and the stage was alive with vibrant performances, ranging from traditional dances to contemporary music. APAPA leaders from across the country danced to celebrate the 88th birthday of CC Yin, bringing the evening's atmosphere to a climax.

This celebration was not only a joyful gathering but also a showcase of APAPA's many years of dedication and hard work. From its humble beginnings as a nonprofit organization, APAPA has grown into the most influential Asian American political education platform in the nation. Since its founding in 2001, APAPA has expanded to chapters and ambassadors across the country, becoming a key force in promoting Asian American political participation and education.

Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Asian American Community

During the conference, APAPA leaders reflected on past achievements while setting clear goals for the future. By enhancing collaboration between chapters, improving internal educational resources, and continuing to advocate for greater political participation within the Asian American community, APAPA is working to foster a more inclusive and robust Asian American presence. At the close of the event, Mary Yin Liu delivered a concluding speech, stating, "For 24 years, APAPA has been committed to advocating for Asian American political education and voicing the concerns of our community. Today’s meeting marks a new beginning, and we will continue to move forward together, building a better future for the next generation."
